Broomhill air quality symposium will consider what can be done to improve local air quality
Submitted by BANG admin 16 January
A
symposium will be held at the University School of Medicine in Beech
Hill Rd on saturday 21st April to consider the causes of the high air
pollution levels in Broomhill and what practical steps can be taken to
improve the situation. The symposium, which is being organised by
Broomhill Forum, will feature an impressive range of speakers with
expertise in environmental and public health and also in traffic
management. We are particularly pleased that Ben Hamilton-Bailie will
attend to speak about the concept of shared space and how this radical
approach to traffic management could improve the experience of
Broomhill's streets. Watch this space for details of how to register
for a place at the symposium, which should be available soon.

New plans under discussion for the Broomhill Library
Submitted by BANG admin 22 November
The
plans to move the Broomhill Library to a new building on Ashgate Road
have now fallen through. The council are looking at a number of
alternatives, including a possible new building on Spooner Road, and a
move to Willis House on Peel St. The Broomhill Forum have convened a
library subgroup to look at these options and to consult with all
community stakeholders concerned. The subgroup has already met and is
currently seeking some detailed information on the various options.
Broomhill Village Show - Thanks to all who supported this event!
Updated 28th September
A
glorious sunny day, brilliant turnout and amazing range of talent on
display - our very first Village Show exceeded expectations. We had
nearly 200 exhibits entered, with particularly stiff competition in
cakes, jam, knitting and garden produce. The recycling categories
provided some of the biggest surprises with the variety and quality of
entries. For the generosity of local businesses who supported the event
financially, by donating prizes, and by giving up time to judge the
entries, a huge THANK YOU! To see some lovely photos of prize winners
and more, follow this link.
Later opening hours for Broomhill pub rejected by Planning
Submitted by BANG admin 28 September
The York pub's application to extend its opening hours into the small hours of the night was considered
yesterday by the council's Planning Board, which, after a discussion of nearly three
quarters of an hour, rejected that Application by 6 votes to 4. The
Council's Planning Officer recommended rejection with a lengthy
and detailed case. This included reference to the large number of
comments submitted by residents: " The history of comment from
the Broomhill public has shown a long-term problem with night-time noise and
disorder in the neighbourhood. The present trading situation in Broomhill at
night is not a norm within which a trader can argue fair competition, because
several of these traders are opening outside their legally agreed hours and are
continually prosecuted". Community representatives also attended and addressed the planning committee in person (more)..

A Manifesto for Broomhill - debated at the AGM in April
Submitted by BANG admin 23 May
The
‘Manifesto for Broomhill’ that we have been working on aims
to capture in just a few brief words the
key issues that really matter to the community here. We think that this
manifesto can be used, for example, to form an agenda for discussions
with our local councillors. It also helps to guide our input to local
democratic structures such as the Community Assembly.
This
manifesto is intended to be a living document and so we will spend some
time at each of our regular monthly meetings discussing an issue from
it, and updating it over time. We welcome any views on it from local
residents; if you are interested in contributing please come along to
one of our informal, friendly meetings.
Download the latest version of the Manifesto for Broomhill here.
