Crime in Broomhill

In 2000 Sheffield has one of the lowest crime rates for big cities in the UK. In part this reflects the relatively stable local communities and in part the level and quality of policing. the following notes show the changes over recent years in the Broomhill area of the city.

June 1999

The 1999 Crime Report.

The total number of crimes reported was 105, broken down in the usual way as Burglary Dwellings, Burglary Sheds/Garages/Offices, Theft from the Person, Theft from Motor Vehicles, Theft of Motor Vehicles etc.
The figures for 'J' District, April to April, showed a reduction of crime of 6%. The breakdown of offences street by street evoked most interest from residents present. Not announced at this meeting was the fact that the Home Office has directed monies to various districts in Sheffield of which Broomhill will be one for a Burglary Prevention Project.

Also discussed was the continuing problem of noise and disturbance caused by those returning from clubs in the early morning. Birkdale School had lodged an official complaint with the University for criminal damage caused to its premises.

Dec. 1998

The police representatives on Broomhill Forum presented crime figures for the Broomhill area focusing on house burglaries, purse snatching, aggressive begging etc. A strong recommendation was made for property marking. For this and other such matters, advice can be received from the police, contact number 2964923.

June 1998

A brief account from the police to the BANG AGM held on 1 May 1998, emphasised that, apart from car crime around the Hallamshire Hospital area, Broomhill is a comparatively low crime area.

Nov. 1996

Crime and Crime Prevention

A Police Constable has attended a number of BANG Committee Meetings and has kept us informed about crime in the area which, despite the large number of thefts of and from cars, is not as bad as in some other areas of Sheffield. There is no apparent pattern in car crime and no peak times, making it difficult for the police to target this. There were a large number of car crimes around the private schools, particularly around Oakholme Road during sports sessions at Birkdale School in the evenings and this was being targeted. Hopefully the situation has now improved.

Advice was given on steps to take when going away and leaving the house unoccupied for more than a day.

May 1995

One of the new Community Police Constables gave a very interesting description of the re-organisation of the police service locally. He is responsible for the area above Fulwood and Whitham Roads, extending to Crooks and Crosspool, with another Community Police Constable responsible for the rest of Broomhill. Telephone calls to the police on 2852211 are now routed to Eckington. Hammerton Road has been downgraded. A brief resume of crime figures for the area was given. Whilst house burglaries and crimes against the person had decreased significantly, theft from and of cars had increased by over 40%. The Community Constable asked people to be vigilant and to report anything suspicious.

May 1993

AGM - 28 April

The discussion centred on the need for improved pedestrian crossing facilities at Crookes Junction and at the Newbould Lane - Glossop Road crossroads, and on the flouting of no entry signs by cars. The points raised were dealt with by our community constable, who also dealt with crime in the area and the inevitable nuisance caused by a small minority of the large number of students living in Broomhill or in the immediate neighbourhood.
