Broomhill conservation area approved - March 1977

The Broomhill CONSERVATION AREA was approved (2.3.77) by the City Council. One of our petitions was successful. Nos. 8,10,12 and 14 Beech Hill Road are included ......No joy on the Marlborough Road triangle though - we can't win all the time!

The general object of a conservation area is "to preserve and enhance the area for the benefit of local residents and those who share the view that visual and historical links with the past should be retained".

Boundaries

For lovers of detail the boundaries are:- along Clarkehouse Rd, Glossop Rd to Beech Hill Rd (including 8,10 12,14) then in a line to Tree Root Walk (excluding Stone Grove). The boundary line crosses Whitham Rd, passing behind Dalkeith Terrace and runs north behind Moor Oaks Rd to include the Parkers Lane terraces. It joins Parkers Rd, then runs along Crookes Rd, Hallamgate Rd and Tapton House Rd and crosses Manchester Rd to join the boundary of the existing Endcliffe Conservation Area just above the Hallam Tower Hotel (now the Post House). The line runs south along the Endcliffe boundary to Endcliffe Vale Rd and then it rejoins Clarkehouse Rd.

Features of our conservation area

In the explanatory leaflet issued by the City Council attention was drawn to the many listed buildings including:

The Mount - Glossop Rd,/Newbould Lane (1830s)

King Edward VII School (formerly Wesleyan Proprietary Grammar School) -(1837)

Tower of St. Marks (1871)

463 Glossop Rd (1830s)

440 Glossop Rd (1851)

Pisgah House ( early 1800s)

60 Westbourne Rd (1851)

9-19 Taptonville Rd ( after 1851)

Other areas mentioned include Taptonville Rd as a whole, Lawton Rd, Summerfield,

6-20 Ashgate Rd, 91-127 Crookes Rd and 435-447 Glossop Rd.

Being in a Conservation Area not only protects buildings but also safeguards our many splendid trees.

Alterations, demolition and new development of buildings will be more strictly controlled.

Destruction and lopping of trees will also be controlled.

Schemes can be considered for preserving and improving the area's character.
